Content Marketing Trends in Malaysia 2026: What Engages Consumers?
Malaysians are consuming digital content across an increasingly crowded media landscape. From short videos and social media feeds to online news and personalised recommendations, consumers have more content choices than ever. For brands and marketers, the challenge is no longer simply reaching audiences but creating content that captures their attention and encourages meaningful engagement.
So, what makes Malaysians stop scrolling, watch, read, or interact with online content?
Our Vodus Study reveals that while short-form videos dominate content preferences, usefulness, personal relevance, and credibility are important drivers of engagement. The findings also highlight how content discovery and consumption behaviours differ across consumer groups, offering valuable insights into Malaysia's evoving digital content landscape.
Key Insights
- 79% of Malaysians say useful or informative content strongly influences their engagement, followed closely by personal relevance at 76%.
- 52% engage most with short-form videos, rising to 63% among Malaysians aged 18–23.
- 60% discover new content through social media feeds, while 51% of Malaysians aged 18–34 discover content through platform recommendations.
- 70% are willing to watch long-form content when interested in the topic, showing that consumers still engage with detailed content when it delivers value.
Research Methodology
The findings are based on the Vodus Media Consumption Study Malaysia 2026, conducted from 17 to 20 July 2026 among 1,793 Malaysian adults aged 18 and above who had used media platforms in the past 30 days.
The nationwide study covered Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak, using Vodus' proprietary OMTOS online survey methodology. Responses were post-stratified to reflect the Malaysian population's demographic composition. Sample sizes vary across questions due to the micro-survey methodology.
Our Vodus Study examines media consumption, content preferences, engagement behaviour, advertising effectiveness, consumer trust, social commerce, and emerging digital trends.
Malaysians Value Useful and Relevant Content Over Entertainment Alone
In a crowded digital environment, brands often compete for attention through entertaining videos, viral trends, and eye-catching visuals. However, our Vodus Study reveals that delivering meaningful value is more influential in encouraging engagement.
79% of Malaysians say useful or informative content strongly influences whether they engage with it, followed closely by personally relevant content at 76%.
This suggests that consumers are not simply looking to be entertained. They are also seeking content that addresses their interests, provides practical information, or helps them understand topics that matter to them.
Other factors, including trusted sources, ease of consumption, entertainment value, and attention-grabbing presentation, also influence engagement. However, usefulness and relevance emerge as the strongest overall drivers.
The importance of informative content is particularly evident among Malaysians with higher educational attainment. 83% of bachelor's degree holders say useful or informative content strongly influences their engagement, compared with 79% overall. This suggests that educational background may play a role in shaping what consumers value when deciding whether to engage with content.
The full Vodus Study explores how these engagement drivers vary across age, income, education, and regional groups, providing a more comprehensive understanding of what motivates different audiences.
Short-Form Videos Lead, but Content Preferences Vary Across Audiences
Short-form videos have become a defining feature of digital content consumption, particularly across platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
Our Vodus Study found that 52% of Malaysians engage most with short-form videos, making them the leading preferred content format.
Their popularity reflects the importance of delivering content quickly and making information easy to consume. Short videos allow consumers to explore different topics, discover new ideas, and engage with content without committing substantial time.
However, short videos are not the only formats that matter. Malaysians also engage with long-form videos, articles, image-based posts, livestreams, social media stories, podcasts, and other interactive content. These formats serve different purposes, from quick entertainment to more detailed information and discussion.
The preference for short-form videos is particularly pronounced among younger Malaysians. 63% of consumers aged 18–23 engage most with short-form videos, compared with 52% overall. This reinforces the popularity of quick, easily accessible content among younger audiences.
While short-form video leads nationally, the relative appeal of other formats varies across demographic groups. The full Vodus Study reveals the complete content-format rankings and demographic breakdowns, including differences across age, gender, region, education, and household income groups.
Social Media Feeds Dominate Content Discovery, but Algorithms Are Changing the Landscape
Creating engaging content is only part of the digital content experience. How Malaysians discover content also influences what they encounter and choose to consume.
Our Vodus Study found that 60% of Malaysians discover new content through social media feeds, making them the leading discovery channel.
Personalised recommendations and platform algorithms also play an important role, alongside recommendations from friends and family, influencers, search engines, online news websites, and other media sources.
These findings highlight how content discovery increasingly extends beyond deliberate searches or following specific brands and publishers. Consumers are also exposed to new information through feeds and recommendations shaped by their platform activity.
Younger Malaysians are particularly inclined towards algorithm-driven discovery. 51% of consumers aged 18–34 discover content through platform recommendations, compared with 37% overall. This suggests that personalised feeds are especially relevant to how younger audiences encounter new topics, trends, and content.
At the same time, personal recommendations and information-led channels continue to contribute to content discovery, demonstrating that different audiences rely on different sources.
Our Vodus Study provides detailed discovery-channel rankings and demographic comparisons, revealing which channels are most relevant to different consumer segments.

Short-Form Content Captures Attention, but Longer Content Still Matters
The growing popularity of short videos might suggest that Malaysians have little interest in longer or more detailed content. However, our Vodus Study reveals a more nuanced picture.
While consumers generally prefer content that is quick and direct, 70% say they are willing to watch long-form content when the topic interests them.
This suggests that a preference for shorter content does not necessarily translate into an unwillingness to engage more deeply. Instead, consumers may be selective about where they invest their time and attention.
Our Vodus Study also examines behaviours such as saving or sharing useful content, reading comments before forming opinions, and scrolling until something captures attention. These behaviours demonstrate that engagement extends beyond passive viewing, with consumers willing to spend more time exploring content that is relevant to them.
Content consumption also differs according to how audiences discover information. 83% of consumers who discover content through social media feeds prefer quick and direct content, compared with 79% overall. This highlights the relationship between content discovery channels and consumption preferences.
At the same time, the willingness to engage with longer content demonstrates that audiences do not necessarily favour short content in every situation. The depth of engagement can depend on the relevance of the topic and how consumers encounter it.
